![]() Silly me, I had forgotten that French was very much in use in the English court at the time. ![]() What I also found disconcerting at the beginning was dealing with England in French. This novel then deals with a fascinating period, the one that led to the revolt against Isabelle's husband, king Edward II, in which she, together with her lover Roger Mortimer, had a hand – hence the epithet Louve de France (the She-Wolf of France). But since Druon thinks that Philippe was a relatively good monarch, the series jumps over his reign, and we are to follow his sister Isabelle, who is the Queen of England. The previous volume ended with the coronation of Philippe V, after he retrieved and manipulated an old law that prevented women to access the throne. I guess historical fiction is a bit like journalism – the hideous make better stories. So far, the volumes were roughly consecutive, but this time there is a jump of about five years and we also change countries. The beginning of the fifth volume in Druon’s series Les Rois Maudits is a bit disconcerting. ![]()

![]() ![]() The title of the book was a quotation from Mme Yourcenar’s novel, Memoirs of Hadrian: ‘Let us try, if we can, to enter into death with open eyes.’ Galey, a French journalist, had been to interview her on Mount Desert Island. In that same year, Les Yeux Ouverts: Entretiens avec Matthieu Galey was published in Paris. However, the justice minister granted her dual nationality on the grounds of her ‘evident cultural links’ with France, and in 1980 she became the first woman member of the Academy. Thus when she was proposed for membership of the French Academy, it was natural that some Frenchmen would make an issue of her nationality, in order to prevent a woman joining their club. She became a US citizen in 1947 and has lived for more than thirty years on Mount Desert Island, off the coast of Maine. Marguerite Yourcenar was born in Brussels in 1903. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In her memory, Jason had broken up with her when she told him she was pregnant-the complete opposite of what Jason remembers.Īnyway, Jason and Daniela hook up. ![]() ![]() Taren is kind and considerate of Kael, sensitive to the fact that he is new to the role of concubine as well as to sex with a man. They are also much more open sexually, with same sex couples well accepted and concubines and even public sex fairly commonplace. The country is much larger and wealthier than Korai. Kael is very out of his element when he arrives in Zandria. So although he is terrified and furious at his father, he agrees to the service. Although Kael legally has the right to refuse, he doesn’t want to cause his country further bloodshed or his own dishonor by not taking actions that will end the war. As part of the settlement agreement to end the war, Kael’s father agrees to give Kael to the Zandrian warlord Taren as a concubine. Korai initiated the aggression, but Zandria is bigger and stronger and soundly defeated them. Kael is a military commander and royal prince of Korai, a country at war with Zandria to the north. ![]() But I had read some good reviews and it sounded interesting so I figured I’d give it a shot.
